IELTS Speaking Part 2: How to Speak for 2 Minutes Confidently

Many candidates freeze when the examiner hands them the cue card. Here is a reliable framework to fill your two minutes every time.

Use the 1-minute preparation time wisely

Do not try to write out full sentences. Instead, jot down three to five key words or phrases for each bullet point on the card. Think of a specific memory or example — abstract answers are harder to expand on than personal stories.

The PEEL structure

Organise each bullet point using PEEL:

  • Point — state your main idea
  • Explain — give a reason or detail
  • Example — share a specific example or anecdote
  • Link — connect back to the main topic
  • Filler phrases that buy you thinking time

Native speakers naturally use phrases like 'What I find particularly interesting is…' or 'What strikes me most about this is…' These are legitimate and sound fluent, not hesitant.

Extend your answer beyond the card

After covering all four bullet points, add a reflection: how the experience made you feel, or how your attitude has changed since. This naturally extends your response without repetition.
